WoW Travel Adores Little Kulala

and explains  in this travel journal entry why it matches in their eyes the best experiences at of of the other Top Namibia Africa Lodges.

It was still dark when we left, at 5:30 am. I was woken – Kulala means ’sleep’, in the Oshiwambo language – by shouting outside my gorgeous ‘room’, about which more anon, by one of the resort’s five guides, Willy (part of a guide’s role is to wake the guests to make sure they are up and ready at that amazing hour).

At five he brought me a continental breakfast tray in true Little Kulala tradition, with plunger coffee and the most marvellous seed-studded wholegrain bread, lightly toasted. At 5:30 precisely, I walked through sand, lit by a full moon, about a hundred yards to the resort’s main lodge.

Our little party introduced itself. Willy was also in charge of four Sydneysiders, Andrew, Bronwyn, Carsten – easy to remember, ABC – and Megan, two sisters, two couples touring the whole of southern Africa. We set off in a sand-colored Land Rover Defender. We were dressed in layers: I had my airline sleep suit and inflight socks, black thermal gloves and a black cashmere pashina over my sand-colored and black daytime gear.

First we headed 40 miles west, out of Wilderness Safaris’ wilderness reserve to the Sossusvlei area of Namib Naukluft National Park. As light dawned the colors that are oh-so-Africa appeared, a ballet where the corps is dressed in pastel shades. The flat-flat land, parched dry for so many years, is tufted with palest lemon grass, a slight green tinge to it, what our enophile friends would label a Chablis. Bare ragged-top stone hills rise up, offering a light gray at that hour. There are also, the other side of the valley, soft orange sand dunes, sometimes rising 900 feet or more. Above it all, at dawn, you have a palest blue sky with hints of lavender, almost moonstone colored. Oh the skies of Africa.

Were they one of the reasons that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stayed here so long, moving here to have their twins? We gathered in front of Dune One (the biggest dunes are numbered or named), looking back east at the point where Willy said the sun, a searing buttercup, would appear, and as it came up, above the ragged skyline, he told us to turn around. The sand dunes, reflecting the sun’s rays, had changed from corps de ballet to prima donna, they were now vivid orange, painted as if by Pucci.

This was the greatest revelations since St Paul rode to Damascus – but this one happens every 24 hours, and has done for millennia. The dunes have been here that long, by the way. Iron-rich sands from the Kalahari were washed west to the Atlantic by the well-named Orange river, and over the centuries they were deposited along the coast and then presumably blown inland.

They are kept in place, despite the winds, by miniscule rivers that form borders. Yes, said Willy, he has seen the dunes shift over ten years or so but, day by day, they hardly move, although your footprints will have disappeared by tomorrow. The dunes rise as peaks, almost knife-edged, and depending on the light one side might be that Pucci orange, the other a dark slate gray (the sand is also rich in manganese, and 59% quartz). Were we hallucinating after only a couple of hours? Next on the schedule was to strip off outer clothing layer, put on masses of sunscreen and then a visit to Deadvlei (dead valley), an example of what happens when water dries up. We climbed small dunes and had another surprise. Over the peak we were looking down at what looked like a palest green curvilinear skating rink, a mile long and almost as wide.

This is dead sand, left behind from the verdant valley that was here until a millennium ago. Some of the acacias from that time remain, long-dead black trunks that gracefully arch and bend. Would that an Australian choreographer of the caliber of Graeme Murphy, Stephen Page or Meryl Tankard would come here, to pick up ideas for yet more ballets. Ah, this day is full of excitement. We now drive to the base of Big Mama dune, which rises 320 feet above us but here her sharp crest twists as if she is doing a yoga turn.

Can vertigo-sufferers cope? This one did, rising up the knife-edge buoyed by the fact that Megan said, from new experience on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, that you cannot fall all the way down, the sand stops you. Going up that edge was like struggling through, well, sand. You pull your back foot out, put that foot in front of the other and feel both feet sinking. An incredible amount of sand gets into each shoe with each step, and soon you are carrying another pound per foot, or that is what it feels like.

Could this be a punishing new aerobic exercise, Big Mama shows the way? Finally we reached the top of the knife-edge, and then we had to get down. Some others, more intrepid, had simply plunged down the face of the dune, but I preferred what remained of a path. I went down sideways, and with each foot put down sand trickled yet further down, like an outgoing tide. At the base were prickly nara bushes, which have roots going down 75 feet or so to find any trace of water they can. It was time for brunch. The park sensibly provides permanent tables and benches, under parched trees. Willy had set out full linens, and metal plates and Laguiole-type knives, and tupperware containers of different salads, and chicken legs and vegetarian patties and more of that bread, full of pumpkin seeds and other goodness.

Little birds waited around, for the crumbs. (The incredible birds of Namibia bring many ornithologists, to watch them, and listen to them.) The final stop was at Sesriem Canyon, 95 feet deep and about 20 feet across, two miles long. You climb down and, my goodness, there really is water, albeit pine colored and not exactly inviting. Look up, and the top levels of geological strata are rock-studded, remarkably like the lodge’s divine bread…. Up at ground level, three baboons looked down at us, warily. Believe it or not all the above, including movement from one excitement to another, meant we finally got home at 2pm. And home it is, after only one night. It had been a 24-hour journey from my home in England to get here.

This included driving to Heathrow airport, flying London to Johannesburg, three hours in the really agreeable British Airways’ premium lounge – Monica, there, is genuine hospitality, a host with the most. Next came another British Airways flight, operated by its franchisee Comair, to the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. There the lovely Kerry, who looked all of 17 years old, waited with a name sign, and we flew, just the two of us, 60 minutes in a Cessna Centurion II. She is South African, and one of six female pilots in the Sefofane company, Wilderness Safaris’ own charter company. We landed on an airstrip, not a house in sight, the pale lemon board-flat Namib desert bordered by rocky hills that look like geological cross-sections from one’s schooldays.

A pale sand-colored Land Rover arrived, driven by Johann Fourie, the former dive teacher who runs the place, and 45 bumpy minutes later, having passed lots of beautiful and oh-so-graceful springboks, we got to Little Kulala, one of Wilderness Safaris’ lodge resorts. There are 11 ‘rooms’ at Little Kulala: one is double, so total capacity is 24 adults. They are all the same. The main airconditioned room, 42 by 24 feet has an unlined ceiling rising to thatch, matching the outdoor sala on the terrace, which also has a 16 sq ft plunge pool, and 15 stairs lead to a flat rooftop terrace, above the room’s bathroom area, where you can choose to sleep out, under the stars.

Floors inside and out are putty-colored painted boards, and putty and off-white are the only colors used throughout, for painted heavy-board bedhead and bed platform, leather-strip rugs, fixed floppy-cushion sofas and outdoor loungers. The indoor bathroom has a double shower, putty and moss linens, and Charlotte Rhys toiletries. I am shown how a metal bucket can be used for storing water coming out of taps before it gets hot.

There is a third shower outside, in the small private no-green garden behind. Water is such a precious commodity here: the resort uses its own bore holes and re-usable bottles are provided (there is a water purifier) to discourage drinking the one-use water bottles that are, of course, in your minibar, together with soft drinks and miniatures and beer. This is sustainability, but not sock it to you. My roof has two solar panels, which heat all my hot water, but other electricity is provided, anyhow, 24 hours a day. There are proper coat hangers, but robes are soft local cotton rather than plush terry.

There is a kettle, with coffee plunger, but the mugs are local ceramic rather than designer porcelain. When you return to your room after dinner, hot water bottles are in the bed, and you can read by a fiber optic light – the library, up eight stairs from the main lodge, has an excellent collection of Namibian topography and wildlife books. In the morning, if you have not already left on a trip, pull up your blinds and look out, at a flat ’sea’ of sand, small rocks and that bleached grass – about ten miles away, the pale lemon gives way to the soft pink of barren hills, with soft blue sky behind. This is an African safari that revolves around you. Want to go on a trek? Fine.

Want to stay home and laze by the pool? Fine. Want to dine on your terrace? But of course. Meals are customized, whenever you want. Breakfast might be that 5am in-room tray or hours later. Lunch can be out in the wild, or something in the main lodge, or on its terrace if weather permits, and dinner the same. In the evenings big log fires burn in the dining area, and by the well-stocked bar (all standard liquor, and ten house wines, are in this all-inclusive rate, but Veuve Clicquot is extra, as is hot air ballooning). Ballooning in Namibia is best at sunrise.

On morning at dawn as I took a little pre-breakfast jog – watched by several springboks – a multicolored balloon arose in the distance, its red the same as the sunrise colors of the mountains. Two hours later, I was on my way, to be flown north towards the Skeleton Coast.

Big Mama from up above appears like the top of a giant cake , hundreds of miles long, frosted in soft milk chocolate that someone has taken a palette knife to sculpt in waves and folds, with those characteristic knife edges. Finally, nearly an hour after leaving Little Kulala, we passed over the edge of ‘cake’ to another Chablis-colored landscape, this time pock-marked with dark grey hills and even a volcano that rise from its flatness.

But that is another story. Ongava Lodge | Top Namibia Lodge

is the crown jewel in the Ongava game reserve shared by the two game lodge establishments. The beauty of Ongava apart from the abundant wildlife in a private game park lies in the vast array of plant life and vegetation,  including the Mopane woodlands unique to this part of Namibia.

Dunes Lodge | Top Namibia Lodges

resembles those lonely Sierra Nevada desert cottage straight out of the cowboy pictures.

It is situated about a half-hour’s flight south of the Sossusvlei dunes in the 444,000-acre NamibRand Nature Reserve. Another private conservation project, begun in the 1980’s by Namibian environmentalist Albi Bruckner, who transformed this area of low rolling dunes and tall grass from sheep farms into a group of small lodges known as the Wolwedans (The Dance of the Wolves) Collection.

The Dunes Lodge is a string of 10 wood-and-canvas cottages linked by walkways set with large lanterns and potted cacti; the aboveground pool is shaded by a sailcloth awning. For minimal impact on the environment, the entire camp was designed using only wood and canvas.

No wonder that scenery like the Dunes Lodge and other Top Namibia Lodges and parks are attracting more and more Hollywood producers looking for that Sierra Nevada desert feel to produces movies in country with excellent communications  infrastructure but very low production costs.

Serra Cafema Camp | Top Namibia Lodge

is one of the Kaokoland region’s best kept secrets.

Greener than the Namib, Kaokoland, in Namibia’s northwest corner, is a tableau of dales framed by volcanic mountains. The region is home to many Himba, a nomadic people numbering 12,000 who are scattered throughout northwestern Namibia and southern Angola.

The women are especially striking, with elaborately braided dreadlocks and glistening red skin (a special paste protects them from the sun). At the Serra Cafema Camp (doubles from $813, all-inclusive), the main lodge sits on stilts in an oasis of green albida trees above the Kunene River, which separates Namibia and Angola.

The eight loftlike chalets are filled with carved Nguni furniture, and in the bathrooms, copper basins are mounted on log pedestals. The food is sophisticated—especially the candlelit dinners, which might include fish en papillote followed by a chocolate mousse.

Take a hike with Franco Morao, one of the camp’s top guides. Morao will point out goliath herons and fresh sets of long, smooth crocodile tracks. He’s also good at spotting small creatures, such as pairs of toktokkie beetles, the males piggybacking on the females to shade them while they forage for food.

Little Kulala | Top Namibia Safari Lodge

is one of Namibia and Africa’s leading luxury lodges guaranteeing an exquisite out of Africa experience.

The Namib runs for 1,200 miles along the entire Atlantic coast of the country. A decade ago, adventure-travel company Wilderness Safaris acquired a 90,000-acre spread adjacent to the colossal Sossusvlei sand dunes to create the Kulala Wilderness Reserve.

Today, this private park contains three small lodges. The newest is the Little Kulala (doubles from $900, all-inclusive), with 11 distinctive cement, wood, and glass thatched-roof villas. Each has a grand deck with a plunge pool; a rooftop terrace with “sky beds” for stargazing; and a minimalist studio with a platform bed, bleached plank floors, and leather shag throw rugs.

Bouncing across the sand on one of the guided desert drives, you’ll encounter giant dragonflies, springbok, spotted hyena, gemsbok with long elegant horns, and camel thorn trees hung with the monster nests of the sociable weaver (these avian apartment buildings can hold several hundred birds and last for up to a hundred years). Equally intriguing are the mysterious circles of grass, some as large as 30 feet in diameter; there are many theories as to their origins, from termites to static electricity.

The main attractions, however, are the great Sossusvlei dunes, with their distinctive salmon color and sharp edges; they resemble colossal pyramids. Of the hundreds of dunes, a few are standouts, like Big Daddy, which measures almost 1,000 feet, and Number 45, where climbing up (and body-sliding down) are permitted.

Little Kulala is therefore one of the must experience Top Namibia Africa Safari Lodges which I highly recommend.
