Namibia’s NACOMA Now Largest Protected Area in Africa

The Namibia Coast Conservation and Management (NACOMA) Project brings the country one step closer to forming the 8th largest protected area in the world and the largest in Africa.
This comes after the Namibian Coast Conservation and Management (NACOMA) Project’s announcement that the central coastal area might be proclaimed as a protected area as early as next year.
If proclaimed, the West Coast Recreation Area between Sandwich Harbour and the Ugab river, will form part of the greater Namib Skeleton Coast National Park, which will also include the Skeleton Coast, Namib Naukluft Park and the Sperrgebiet National Park.

Zod Braby, coordinator of NACOMA, said that a management plan has been developed already and that further consultation is taking place with the public to establish whether ‘Namib National Park’ is an appropriate name for the central coastal area. He said the Ministry of Environment and Tourism will be proposing the names of both the Namib National Park and Namib Skeleton Coast National Park to Cabinet and that it would be good to include public support and comments in the proposal.
The Namib Skeleton Coast National Park covers an area of 107 540 square kilometres and stretches along the coastline of 1570 kilometres and extends inland from as narrow as 25 kilometres in the north to180 kilometres in the Namib Naukluft area.

The national park also shares common borders with other conservation areas including, Ais-Ais/Fish River Canyon National Park and freehold conservancies as well as private conservation areas. Namib Skeleton Coast National Park is also linked to the Iona National Park in Angola and Richtersveld in South Africa.
